Traveling on an airplane with kids can feel overwhelming, especially when traveling with more than one. The thought of managing little ones in a confined space for hours might make many parents hesitate. Here are eight practical tips to help parents enjoy traveling with kids without the usual chaos.

Choose First Class When Possible
Let's start right off the bat with the controversal tip. We ask that you keep an open mind when reading though, we're not here to sell luxury. In our opinion, while flying first class might seem like a luxury, when traveling with kids, it’s often worth the extra cost. The extra legroom and wider seats give children space to move and play without disturbing others (trust, our toddler took advantage of it). Parents can also relax a bit more, knowing their kids have room to stretch out. Mama had enough room to eat her spinach omelette as Bubbas took his morning nap on her lap, then Daddy had enough room to bounce him on his knee without disturbing other passengers. Often times, the flight includes a full meal for every paid passenger, and the option to place the order ahead of time gives parents one less thing to worry about during a long day of travel. The quieter environment and better service can reduce the usual frustrations of air travel.
This choice can make a long (or long in spirit) flight feel less like a battle and more like a shared adventure. It’s an investment in peace of mind and comfort that pays off in calmer kids and less exhausted parents.
Pack Light and Smart
One carryon for adults and one for kids is all you need. We've tested this theory for a wekend, we've tested this theory for a week. There is a such thing as travel size laundry detergent (or a refillable travel bottle) if it's needed. Also, as a parent tip: if you need to pack A LOT of diapers, save yourself the sacred space needed in your carry on and Amazon Prime a pack to your hotel. Make sure you have it sent under the same name as the booking and call the hotel in advance to let them know you're expecting a package! Another option is to pick up a pack if you have a major store near your hotel. Packing light helps avoid the hassle of checking bags and waiting at baggage claim, and let's not forget the possibility of the misplaced luggage (ugh, one of Mama's flying fears). For kids: pack essentials like diapers, a change of clothes, and a small bag of toys in a personal bag (diaper bag). Choose toys that are quiet, compact, and engaging to keep little hands busy without disturbing other passengers.
A well-packed carryon means you have everything you need within reach, making transitions smoother and reducing stress during boarding and deplaning.

The Bag of Small Toys
A small bag of toys can be a lifesaver on a plane with kids. Include items like coloring books for older kids (I did not want to take that risk with my young ones), cars, characters, a music player (with headphones, of course), and books. These toys should be easy to pack and not noisy. Rotating toys throughout the flight keeps children interested and distracted.
In our experience, having a few new or rarely seen toys can capture attention longer, like the long forgotten pop-it bracelet from a birthday goodie bag. If the flight is long, screen time is always an option as some airlines have screens on the head rests with endless options of kid oriented movies. Our mini humans personally preferred the Yoto Mini Player, a couple wooden characters, and a couple wooden cars during the flight. Our oldest also enjoyed watching Monsters Inc. on the plane's tablet before being served breakfast.
Use the Right Child Equipment
The child equipment you bring can either make or break the travel experience. We brought our WAYB Pico Car Seats and Lille Baby Carrier, and they made a HUGE difference. The car seat is compact, weights almost nothing, and fits easily on the airplane seat, providing safety and comfort. The best part? When we landed it was an easy fold and strap onto our carry ons: an easy transition from plane to rental! The baby carrier keeps the younger child close and hands-free, perfect for parents navigating airports with another child. Lastly, we brought our GB All-Terrain Pockit stroller. We've spoken about this stroller before on our site, and it's definitely worth mentioning again because... when can you say you abra-cadabra'd a stroller out of your personal boarding bag? Yes, you read that right: boarding. No extra steps, no hassle of stopping at the gate to have it checked - it went right in the overhead.
Choosing lightweight, portable, and multi-functional gear helps parents manage their kids without extra bulk or hassle.
Plan for Snacks and Hydration
Kids get hungry and thirsty often, especially during flights. Bringing a variety of snacks and refillable water bottles keeps hunger and thirst at bay (keep in mind the water bottles have to be empty before security!). Bring some of the favorite snacks such as the toddler fruit pouches or yogurt bites. If you're having a meal on board, keep in mind not to overpack. Also, parent tip - if your hotel offers pre-packaged "child" snacks at breakfast - snag a couple for the plane ride home!
Offering snacks during takeoff and landing can also help with ear pressure discomfort. Staying hydrated is key to keeping kids comfortable and less cranky. If your baby or toddler still uses a paci, the suction can also help sooth and alleviate pressure discomfort.

Dress Kids in Comfortable Layers
Airplane cabins can be unpredictable in temperature. Dressing kids in layers allows for easy adjustment. Soft, breathable fabrics keep them comfortable whether it’s warm or chilly. Avoid complicated outfits that are hard to change during diaper changes or bathroom trips. If traveling somewhere cold, carry the coats on board with you to layer up before deboarding, this also gives you more room in the carry on luggage.
Comfortable clothing helps kids relax and sleep better on the plane, making the journey easier for parents.
Arrive Early and Use Family Boarding
Arriving early reduces the rush and gives time to handle unexpected delays. Many airlines offer family boarding, allowing parents with young children to board before the crowd. This extra time helps settle kids into their seats and organize belongings without pressure.
Taking advantage of family boarding can reduce stress and avoid the chaos of last-minute boarding.
Prepare for Sleep
Sleep is crucial for a smooth flight. Bring familiar items like a favorite blanket or stuffed animal to help kids feel secure. Encourage naps or sleep during the flight, especially on overnight or early morning trips. Using the baby carrier or car seat can help kids settle and rest.
Well-rested kids are happier and easier to manage, making the whole trip more enjoyable.
